Leading by example: More schools are racing to zero

St. Therese's Catholic College, Good Shepherd Lutheran College in Noosaville and St Andrew's Anglican College in Peregian Springs are three more of the schools attended by Noosa students that have come on board to join the Race to Zero Program.
"As many young people are really concerned about the effects of climate change and as schools are large energy users, learning how to reduce their energy use at school is a really useful way for them to actively reducing their emissions and the effects of climate change", said Dalia Mikail, the Zero Emissions Noosa Race to Zero Project Coordinator.
Sun Shining on Kin Kin

We took the electric car out to Kin Kin to talk with the inspiring Jodie Williams, owner of the renowned Black Ant Gourmet. She exudes her passion about sustainability and talks about dealing directly with local suppliers because, “it’s fresher, tastes better, and keeps the money locally.” She’s about to triple her 30kW system and add batteries too and says”the extra solar will be financed too, but the money that I'm saving is going to pay for the new system. It’s a no brainer”.
Kin Kin folk are frugal energy users. There’s been a 26% reduction in household consumption over 10 years, and they now have the lowest in the Noosa area by a considerable margin.
It’s time to get grid smart

Zero Emissions Noosa’s Thorsten Kels explains what a smart grid will look like as we transition from a grid designed for large and centralised power generation plants to one dominated by more distributed and localised generation dominated, at least in the Noosa area, by rooftop solar. “A real smart grid will have to treat all participants as partners and reward them for their contribution”.

Zero Emissions Noosa representative Vivien Griffin was on hand this week at Noosa Lakes to welcome Oggy E-Scooters to Noosa. “These electric scooters are another fun way to get around in Noosa,” she said. “They have taken off in many cities around the world, so it is great that we now have these green machines here. They are electric, so no carbon emissions from trips, parking is not a problem and Noosa’s great pathway network provides a natural fit to give the scooters a go. We think the scooters can become a terrific addition to the sustainable tourism mix for Noosa.”

Measure Up - Marcus & Peregian Power Ahead

ZEN met up with Noosa Council folks at the Peregian Digital Hub. Annie Nolan, Carbon Reduction Officer said “We're putting solar systems on as many council roofs as they can take.” and Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie told us “More solar installation is actually enriching the Noosa Shire by moving us forward economically as well as taking action on climate change.”

New hinterland newspaper Your Local Lifestyle featured our Pomona postcode 4568 article in their July edition.
Local resident and Noosa Councillor Brian Stockwell says: “It’s great to see over a half of residential properties in Pomona have solar arrays and a bit over a quarter of business properties likewise. With only 12 percent of our roof space used, the town is already getting 41 percent of its power needs from renewables. This makes the goal of zero community emissions by 2026 a realistic goal.”
Whilst fellow Councillor And resident Karen Finzel says “A big shout out to all those who are in the race towards reducing emissions! Pomona Hinterland Village is home to like-minded individuals who are focussed on working locally as a community to help achieve our goal of zero emissions by 2026. Together we strengthen communities.”
